Get To Know Me As A Designer And A Human

jillian who?
Hi! I’m Jillian. A junior Communication Design major at Miami University with a minor in Digital Commerce. I enjoy the outdoors, sports, media, traveling, and reading. My favorite genre to read is fantasy. I love being with friends and family, but I also enjoy my alone time. I would describe myself as kind, dedicated, organized, and creative. I am also the occasional jokester.
why design?
I have always had a passion for art, crafts, and being creative. I love how you can express yourself through your work and creations. Through my time at Miami so far, I have learned that the world of design has endless possibilities. From graphics, layout, web, and even experiences, there are so many routes design can take you.
Through design, I want to be able to help others express themselves, their business, or their brand through my work. I think the most important thing about design is how human-centered it is. Design is all about creating for someone else’s vision rather than your own.
experience
job shadow
During my senior year of high school, I had the experience of job shadowing at a local design firm. Through this experience, I gained real-world insights into what a day-to-day life in the design world looks like. I was able to move around and shadow the designers as they worked on various projects. From logo creation and branding to magazine layouts, I saw it all. I fell in love after my first day and knew this was what I had been looking for. This experience was what confirmed and set my goals for becoming a designer myself.
student design specialist
As seen in my portfolio, I also completed work for the Dean’s Office in the College of Creative Arts at Miami University over the summer of 2025. The work I did covered each department of the CCA, including Theatre, Music, ETBD, Art, and Architecture. Some projects I completed consisted of flyers, postcards, mailing ads, and more. This position taught me great skills that are needed to be a designer, such as communication and problem-solving.
story and layout designer for the miami student magazine
Also found in my portfolio, I recently started as a designer for The Miami Student Magazine. This magazine is a student organization that includes writers, editors, copy editors, and designers. As a designer, I get to create a visual representation for a story written for each issue. Designers can also design for multiple stories, poems, and vignettes included in the magazine. Being part of this magazine has already taught me a lot and is a great experience and practice for future roles and opportunities.
about jilli design co.
I created my brand to reflect the type of designer I strive to be: flexible. I want to do a variety of work using the vast skills I have built through the work in this portfolio, exploring all disciplines and everything design has to offer. I am always eager to learn something new, and the flexibility and mobility of my brand reveal that.
Many designers use their initials as a brand starting point. Although I did play around with my initials a lot, they won’t be my initials forever. I decided to think about nicknames I have been given over the years, and jilli design was born. Jilli is a nickname I was given by a co-worker fairly recently. The letters flow together nicely and create the flexible look I wanted. The brand I created carries sentimental meaning and represents who I am as a designer and as a person.
